Background of the Study
Digital media platforms have revolutionized how language is produced and consumed, with Instagram emerging as a key arena for linguistic innovation. In Lagos, digital memes often incorporate unique Instagram captions that reflect and propagate morphological variations within Nigerian English. These captions, frequently laced with creative word formations, abbreviations, and playful syntax, serve as both expressive and identity-forming tools among young urbanites (Ibrahim, 2023). As Lagos remains a melting pot of linguistic diversity, the interplay between traditional forms and modern digital expressions has led to novel morphological constructions that defy conventional rules. This phenomenon underscores the dynamic relationship between language and digital culture. Recent studies indicate that the process of captioning memes catalyzes morphological creativity, where standard word forms are morphed into hybrid variants that communicate humor and social commentary (Okafor, 2024). Such digital artifacts not only mirror sociocultural dynamics but also influence everyday language practices, making them a fertile ground for linguistic research. Statement of the Problem
Although Instagram has become a vital platform for creative linguistic expression, limited research has focused on its role in driving morphological variation within Nigerian urban contexts. The rapid evolution of digital memes in Lagos, particularly through innovative captioning, presents a challenge to traditional morphological structures. There is a need to systematically investigate how these captions reshape word forms and contribute to language change. Current literature has primarily addressed phonological or syntactic variations, leaving a gap regarding the morphological impact of digital practices. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the mechanisms through which Instagram captions influence morphological innovation, while also considering the socio-cultural factors that drive this transformation (Uche, 2023). Addressing this gap will enhance our understanding of digital language practices in a rapidly evolving media environment (Nwankwo, 2024).
